...holding my breath here waiting for the GOP to rant on and on about Hunter Bidens 2nd Amendment rights.
Whatever the heck this is supposed to do with Pres. Biden is going to be even more of a puzzle for House republicans. It's unconnected to any financial crime, and there's no clue from Weiss about what happened to the charges for paying taxes late that were in the plea deal (paying taxes obviously another republican fav).
Two of the charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, according to the indictment. The less serious charge carries a maximum of 5 years of incarceration.
The original plea deal "required Biden to enter a pretrial diversion program, an option typically applied to nonviolent offenders with substance abuse problems. In all, he would have spent about two years on probation but avoided jail time if he kept to the terms of the deal, which included not owning a gun or engaging in criminal conduct."
The dispute which reportedly blew up his plea deal before the judge was over an understanding Hunter says he had with the prosecutor to get immunity from any more charges stemming from the five-year investigation.
That understanding Hunter believes he agreed to would have closed the book on Weiss' sham investigation which, to the embarrassment of republicans who've openly intended to exploit the now-SC's probe all the way to the election, didn't conclude with ANY of their salacious claims about a laptop or Burisma.
Initially, the investigation centered around Bidens finances related to overseas business ties and consulting work. Over time, investigators with multiple agencies focused closely on whether Biden did not report all of his income, and whether he lied on gun purchase paperwork in 2018
So what is this, except for Weiss punishing Hunter Biden for daring to challenge the prosecutor's authority to keep digging? Why is he moving forward with harsher charges, without any protections against incarceration?
We can all now see this recently-elevated special counsel flailing around, trying to find something to hurt Hunter with, without any logic at all except this persecution prosecution. It shouldn't be legal to just sit on Hunter Biden until he can find something else to accuse him of, but here we are.
Weiss' wheel of misfortune of charges is just harassment, borne out of Trump-era misuse of the Justice Dept. which has now turned into actual jeopardy for Hunter Biden.

(3,096 posts)see what this has to do with President Biden, but they will do everything they can to associate it. It's kind of sad in the way this is all being played in public.
I have no clue regarding the validity of the charges against him, but if he did what they are claiming, it's no small matter. The gun laws are taken pretty seriously.
If I had to guess, and I do since I mostly ignore the media crap regarding all the Hunter Biden stuff, I would guess that it's either completely fabricated, based on gossip, or highly exaggerated. They are looking for anything they can find to damage President Biden.

Trump committed felonies in stealing thousands of pages of classified docs and trying to steal election? Go after Hunter's gun charges and try impeaching President Biden for it.

(3,096 posts)sense, right?
It's not like I don't understand why they do what they do, I just find these methods disgusting.
Political opposition is supposed to be focused on the opposition. Mobsters go after friends, family, and associates.
I can only have faith that the general public can see right through it all.

(22,992 posts)any means necessary. Right now it's his son. These so called Christian gun nuts are very pleased now.
But this too will backfire.
US SC have on records that what they are indicting him on is unconstitutional, but hey the GQP don't give a fuck about the Constitution.

(96,043 posts)And prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law when found to have done so. Hard to think of a more certain means of bringing the country's gun addiction under control. And think of the construction boom in new prisons required: I'd say several million offenders would be a conservative estimate of the total haul....

(44,815 posts)I read that Hunter bought the gun for possible suicide. And a family member intervened snd carelessly discarded it, I think he only had it for two weeks. Of course the Republicans arent gonna show one shred of humanity over someone who is in a suicidal crisis. Will it be a Delaware jury? Im still betting even money that Hunter beats these charges

(94,274 posts)...a good intention of the law meant to keep guns out of impaired or disturbed individuals.
Ironic and unfair, though, that it would be used to potentially jail him. This prosecutor seems careless about the underlying influences in that case, and just intent on prosecuting him for something.

(26,507 posts)with respect to gun laws and gun possession.
I can see the Repugs stepping all over themselves to jump on Hunter - and at the same time contradict themselves with respect to gun laws and gun possession in general.
I think we need to listen very carefully as to what their comments are about this.
