Call of Duty Co-Creator Dead at 55 in California Crash
Industry pioneer Vince Zampella was also behind Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi games
Vince Zampella, a driving force behind some of the most influential shooters in gaming, died at 55 in a single-car crash in Southern California Sunday, the Los Angeles Times reports. Electronic Arts, which owns his studio Respawn Entertainment, confirmed his death Monday, calling it "an unimaginable loss" and saying his impact on the video game world was "profound and far-reaching."
Zampella was one of two people killed Sunday afternoon on Angeles Crest Highway, according to the California Highway Patrol. Investigators say a southbound vehicle left the road for unknown reasons, hit a concrete barrier, and caught fire; the passenger was thrown from the car, while the driver was trapped. Both died at the scene. The car involved was a Ferrari, KTLA reports. TMZ obtained video of the crash, and reports that the vehicle appeared to be speeding.

"Unknown reasons" are pretty obvious: excessive speed and the resulting lack of control.

I happened to be on the same road last night to go watch the meteor shower and passed the flatbed carrying the wreckage as it was coming down. The car was absolutely obliterated.
Unfortunately yes, theres video of the crash showing he was going way too fast in his Ferrari through a tunnel and lost control at the exit where the road takes a sharp turn. People regularly go up there to speed through the tunnel because its a long straight in the middle of the mountains and the echo sounds cool. Sadly people often crash in this exact spot because they dont know the road and its hard to see whats beyond the exit when its bright out. Theres also lots of gravel on the road because its so remote and lightly trafficked.
I know someone who came upon the scene right after it happened and he said there was nothing that could be done. Also its so far out that theres no cell service, and it took first responders at least 45 minutes to get there. Absolutely awful and a reminder that were all one bad decision away from tragedy.

Call of Duty's makers have struck a deal to turn the video game into a live-action film.
The series, launched in 2003, is one of the most popular in the world and regularly tops the annual best-seller charts on consoles and PC.
Publisher Activision has announced it will work with movie studio Paramount to turn the game into a blockbuster "designed to thrill its massive global fan base".
There has been no indication of potential storylines or cast members, but Paramount CEO David Ellison said: "As a lifelong fan of Call of Duty this is truly a dream come true."
