Trump and Schumer Move Toward Possible Deal to Avert a Shutdown

President Trump and Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the minority leader, moved on Wednesday night toward a possible agreement to negotiate new restrictions on federal immigration agents, potentially averting a government shutdown early Saturday when funding for multiple federal agencies is slated to lapse.

Under the emerging plan, according to two officials knowledgeable about it, the Senate would split off legislation funding the Department of Homeland Security from a six-bill package of spending measures needed to keep the military, health programs and other federal agencies funded for the remainder of the fiscal year.

The Senate would pass those bills before a Friday midnight deadline, and Congress also would consider a short-term extension for homeland security operations, which would prevent an interruption of services by the Transportation Security Agency, Coast Guard and Federal Emergency Management Agency.

That stopgap bill would provide time for talks between lawmakers and the White House to draft a new homeland security spending bill that would include new restrictions that Democrats have demanded on the tactics of immigration enforcement officers and more accountability for those accused of using excessive force.

He will not honor any deal he signs.

He will not follow through on any commitments he makes once the deal is inked.

How many times do we have to try to kick the football, only to have it pulled away?

I learned this crap in grade school.

Schumer gave up a lot more than Obamacare subsidies, he paved the way for the Big Ugly Death Bill.

Just wait until Dec. 1, 2026 when the social safety net is gutted.

Two of my demands were;

1. Allow local and state police to investigate the killings of Good and Pretti alongside the FBI. ICE does not get to investigate ICE.
2. Remove the masks, uniforms need to specify what department the wearer works for. A uniform that says POLICE, is not enough. Agents must wear body cams.

Those were just 2 of my ideas before Democrats even sit down to negotiate money. Make them prove they are going to follow the law.

This is why people say both sides are the same.

Also, we are dealing with a demented sociopath, who is already planning to steal the 2026 mid-terms 10 months out and as far as I can tell, you have no counter plan.

It also says Dems have leverage after the massive government funding bill failed with all Dems voting against it and eight Rs joining them. Let's wait and see if they use their leverage. Trump's version of what is going on is not worth listening to or reading about.

Jeffries was just live on CNN and did not commit to anything. He said that he is looking for bold transformative changes. He also said masks off (among other things) are essential. I was glad to hear that because I thought they may be waffling on the masks.

I was extraordinarily disappointed when he announced he would not whip votes for the funding bill, while saying he would be voting against it.

Look, I'm happy if our representatives are speaking out on this and maintaining pressure. I'll be glad to give Rep. Jeffries or Sen. Schumer credit, but I want to see actual deliverables. I'm willing to grade on a curve, even though I shouldn't.

From where I am sitting, and looking at the polls that are coming out, it seems as though the broader public (not Democratic activists like those on this site) are having a Come to Jesus moment.

If leadership can leverage this - surf that wave - I will be happily mistaken. If we end up getting 'decorum and conventions' I will continue to be disappointed.

Every member of the Democratic caucus should be against murder and we should message such. Get the Republicans on the record for literal support for literal murder.

Thank you for informing me about Jeffries presser. I'll try to find it. Still, though, they already passed that bill and it is in Sen. Schumer's hands*.

*but not really because the Senate majority could get rid of the filibuster and just pass whatever anyway
