These maps show how Latino voters helped Democrats flip a reliably red Texas Senate seat
Democrat Taylor Rehmet’s stunning upset victory is explained in part by the massive swing by Latino voters toward his campaign compared to other Democrats in recent elections.

Democrat Taylor Rehmet’s recent upset victory over a MAGA star to represent a reliably red Texas Senate district was, at least in part, due to a significant leftward shift by Latino voters. These maps help illustrate the point.

Precincts in Senate District 9 with a majority of Hispanic residents swung on average 34 percentage points toward Rehmet compared to the margin garnered by the Democratic nominee in 2022, when the seat was last on the ballot.

Across the entire district, VoteHub estimated that Rehmet captured about 79% of the Hispanic vote, a 26-point improvement on the 53% that went for Democrat Kamala Harris in 2024 — the biggest shift of any racial group in the district.

The upshot was a decisive 14-point win for Rehmet, an Air Force veteran and union leader, over GOP activist Leigh Wambsganss in last weekend’s special election runoff.

I can't believe any of those voters ever voted Republican. It was truly a case of chickens voting for Colonel Sanders.

...and interviewed Latinos that voted for Trump and with many interviews came up with that the majority that did and now were flipping on him had three things in common: came to the US and followed the law to be here legally; thought he would be better for the working class economically than a Dem and, despite all indicators, didn't really think he'd let loose the dogs to just grab anyone with the wrong last name, wrong skin color or living in the wrong neighborhood (per the goons).

I get it and I hope Dem leadership does too. While we can paint the GOP on the last item, the ICE goon squad, we need to have some serious vision on the economy. Biden was honest that the President has limited powers to affect jobs, affordability and other economic factors. But it seems pretty obvious we have to listen harder too and acknowledge loudly and often the pain of these kitchen table issues if we want to get our traditional base back and must have some concrete policy vision to help the many that are hurting.
