Vice President JD Vance is caught in a political vise as his isolationist principles collide with the Donald Trump administration's expanding war in Iran and sources now suggest he may bow out of the 2028 presidential race entirely.
According to the Washington Post, Vance's assumed status as heir to the MAGA crown is increasingly uncertain. Questions are already swirling about whether Trump will back Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio for the nomination, with the Iran conflict threatening to complicate the political positioning.
The 41-year-old Marine veteran faces an acute dilemma. Once a fierce critic of America's costly military interventions abroad, he's now forced to defend Trump's growing appetite for military adventurism while managing a coalition that includes ardent war skeptics.

(6,706 posts)The GOP's best bet is probably to nominate someone who has zero ties to the Trump administration.

(22,948 posts)The guy basically bartered whatever credibility he may have had for a seat at the Rapin' Felon Grampy table.
I don't spend an overt amount of time pondering what's on the minds of the MAGAts, but if you want to believe conventional wisdom and what's been said about them so far, chances are excellent that they'll sit out any election that doesn't include Trump. Maybe not forever. But because Gramps is selling those "Trump 2028" hats on his Website, to be denied the pleasure of an illegal and unconstitutional run for a "3rd term" may be a tipping point for them.
At the far end of the tinfoil hat spectrum is the idea of "installing" President Donald Trump Jr.
We know Don Jr wants it. He's on record as saying that he thinks he "deserves" it, that he's the true "heir to MAGA."
I think 2028 will largely be determined by what happens in 2026. IF Democrats are successful in shining a light on the dumbfounding LACK OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS from the Republican-led Congress since the start of Trump's second term, IF Democrats can articulate a plan of action that resonates with voters, the only reason Vance would run in 2028 is if he wants to experience humiliation on a scale that dwarfs what's happening to him right now.

(161 posts)Taking care of people and communities. That's real heroism. Aiming to do things right. Using smarts to accomplish. And finding the courage to do so. That's leadership.
Yelling and making fun of people is neither leadership nor manly.

(22,948 posts)...but I'd wager that in 2024, during the election, few people imagined it would be this bad.
Much of Trump's toxicity will be determined by whether he can dig himself out of the hole he's in, with Epstein, the economy, and Iran.
I can't see any way for him to "turn it around." I think it will only get worse.

(34,884 posts)saying "I know I'd get my ass handed to me." Vance is already one of the most unpopular members of his party, and he won't be riding on Trump's coattails next time around--if there are any coattails left by then. I think ol' JP...JD...whatever the hell he's going by these days...sees the writing on the wall.

(2,273 posts)JD might not have to run fir President because Trump will already have canceled elections. JD will rule while Trump walks away, just as the Ragin Cajun has predicted.
This makes for a profitable parlay in the prediction markets.
