OTTAWA - Prime Minister Mark Carney has endorsed a statement from Canada and its allies expressing their willingness to contribute to efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz more than two weeks into the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.
The statement does not say how they propose to help, although Defence Minister David McGuinty says Canada is considering aiding Irans neighbours if they seek assistance from the NATO alliance.
In response to the U.S.-Israeli airstrikes launched on its territory last month, Iran limited traffic through the strait through which one-fifth of the worlds oil and gas transits and bombed major fuel shipping sites, causing global oil prices to spike.
Canada joined the statement shortly after it was published by the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan.

(55,390 posts)it has no detail as to what they will actually do to "contribute to efforts to reopen the Strait..."
I am not sure why they even released this given the total lack of specificity.

(55,390 posts)it promises nothing of substance and strikes me as empty platitudes at this point. I am looking forward to seeing if they add some actual content to this statement so we can know what the intent is instead of having to guess at it's meaning.

(23,041 posts)Parts of the statement regarding following international law could apply to either Iran or the US.
If Canada gets involved militarily, Carney will be in deep shit with Canadians.
