The VA state Constitution gives the legislature the explicit authority to set a mandatory retirement age for all judges, regardless of bounds of their current term.
SO : Set it to 54.
EFFECTIVE NOW.
No joke, this is the correct and bulletproof solution here.
DO IT NOW. EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.

Who will of course be too busy to hear it on time.

(3,663 posts)If they want to rely on the Packed SCOTUS, go for it.
But frankly, that seems like a fool's errand to me.
Force-retire the hacks that did this, replace them, then go forward.
If the Packed SCOTUS wants to intervene to protect the Republicans, let them try. That will be Exhibit #10000 when it comes time to expand the Court (see: 28 USC 1).
Take off the gloves, punch these bastards in the face, repeat as necessary.
Enough is enough.

Then, after the bill is approved, the entire court would retire. A new court would then be appointed that could re-hear the case and have the opportunity to issue a different ruling.

(22,088 posts)Forcing retirement at 54 for the SC would be insane. All 9 would have to retire, and Trump would pick 9 Justices under 30.

(19,312 posts)Because we let them - even invite them to do so.
Don't use Jean Nate toilet water when the Fascist use gasoline as their go to fire accelerant. To start the flames and feed the bonfires of their habitual schemes of political turmoil they joyfully introduce upon us day upon day. While they decimate American Democracy - but advance and promote their new American Nazi Republican Party to be a viable substitute we should get used to and become comfortable with.
Is this where 250 years of American Exceptionalism has led us to ?
Fuck this crap,... it is exceedingly more difficult to put a happy face on this.
A concerted no holds push back is long-long overdue. The very last ship, the very last hope, the very last opportunity available to us to take a stand and rectify this hellscape is about to sail off into oblivion. If we do not quickly and decisively make a determined move to stop this hyper-sonic missile of Fascistic governance about to explode in our faces.

Understanding Fascistic Governance
Fascistic governance is a far-right, authoritarian political system rooted in early 20th-century Europe, characterized by total state control, ultra nationalism, militarism, and the subordination of individual rights to the perceived needs of the nation Wikipedia+1.
Core Principles,
Supremacy of the State: The state is the highest authority; all aspects of lifeeconomic, social, culturalare subordinated to it. The motto Everything in the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state reflects this polsci.institute.
Authoritarian Leadership: A single, charismatic leader (the Duce or Führer) holds absolute power, often through a one-party state Wikipedia.
Militarism and Nationalism: War and military strength are seen as essential for national rebirth and expansion Wikipedia+1.
Anti-Individualism: Individual rights and freedoms are secondary to national duty; personal autonomy is suppressed in favor of collective goals polsci.institute.
Anti-Communism and Anti-Liberalism: Fascism opposes democracy, pluralism, socialism, and liberalism, viewing them as threats to national unity Wikipedia+1.
Purging Decadence: Societies are to be cleansed of perceived moral or cultural decay, often through suppression of dissent and ideological conformity Wikipedia.
Mechanisms of Control,
Total State Control: The state regulates nearly every aspect of life, from industry to culture, using a centralized administrative state Monergism.
Bureaucratic Machinery: Massive bureaucracies enforce ideology, monitor citizens, and manage the economy, often blurring the line between public and private sectors Monergism.
Propaganda and Indoctrination: State-controlled media and education systems promote nationalist and authoritarian values Monergism.
Suppression of Opposition: Political enemies, minorities, and dissenting groups are persecuted or silenced Wikipedia+1.
Historical Context
Fascism arose in the aftermath of World War I, when leaders exploited national trauma, economic instability, and fears of communism to rally support Wikipedia+1. It combined revolutionary rhetoric with conservative appeals to tradition, often aligning with powerful business interests CFR Education.
Modern Relevance
While fascist regimes are no longer in power, the term is sometimes used loosely to describe authoritarian tendencies. Historians caution that such labels should be applied with precision, as modern political systems differ from the totalitarian structures of the 20th century CFR Education.

Nice to see a sober Republican, for a change.

(22,088 posts)Plus it may take time in both legislatures. If you change it to the ridiculously low age of 54 (no offense, but that's very young), it likely will only affect those not on the bench yet, or possibly those that are on now that are under 54. The older ones are grandfathered in.
