Did taxpayers pay for sean duffy's 7 month road trip reality show?

The Department of Transportation (DOT) maintains that no taxpayer dollars were used for the production of Sean Duffy’s reality show, The Great American Road Trip.

While the DOT has denied direct funding of the series, the situation has sparked significant public debate regarding "taxpayer-funded" travel:

Production Costs: According to a DOT spokesperson, all production costs for the show were covered by The Great American Road Trip, Inc., a non-profit organization. Sponsors such as Boeing, United Airlines, Toyota, and Shell reportedly funded expenses like gas, car rentals, lodging, and activities.

Government-Covered Travel: The DOT confirmed that it covered the costs of flights for Duffy himself when his participation coincided with official duties, such as touring air traffic control towers. The department stated that promoting America's 250th anniversary through this trip was considered part of his official role.

Conflict of Interest Concerns: Critics, including Chasten Buttigieg, have labeled the trip "taxpayer-funded" because Duffy was a salaried government official during the seven-month filming period. Furthermore, ethical concerns have been raised because several of the show's corporate sponsors are industries directly regulated by the DOT.

Duffy defended the project, stating it was filmed during short windows like weekends and spring breaks, and that career ethics and budget officials reviewed and cleared his participation in accordance with federal rules.

Rachel Campos-Duffy on Fox News: 'I'm gonna be really honest, we live in a Pornhub world. This is really wholesome, good, family stuff. This is what families need to do is just get together. That's what our kids want from us. They want our time.'
