Comer: They missed out on a whole year of learning because of Dr Fauci's lies about covid.

This fucking absolute moron.

Comer: "Our children are still suffering the consequences in public schools today. They missed out on a whole year of learning because of Dr Fauci's lies about covid."

"We shut the entire economy down!" Donald Trump in 2020

'We closed all the schools." Donald Trump in 2020.

And you know what, if kids did fall behind, it's probably a price worth paying considering we saved millions of lives and millions of other people from having long term health problems from Covid.

There are families of a lot of people who died that don't think the shutdowns were long enough.

Closing schools in the fall of 2020 and thereafter was probably a mistake that did more damage than it prevented. And it did do significant damage to both learning and development. If we want to be the "Believe Science" people, you also have to believe the massive body of evidence already showing the psychological and educational harm caused by COVID-driven school closures in the 2020-2021 academic year and thereafter. Now, you might of course argue that the cost of that damage was worth it given the danger of COVID, but you can't deny that you are making a calculation that accepts a relatively high level of harm on the kids who missed that year of learning. Let's be honest and not jump to assuming that this is a right wing argument. Yes, believe science, but understand that we made choices with scientific data, and you have to now assess some of those choices.

We can believe in science and side mostly with Fauci over this garbage bag Comer and still believe that a different balancing of interests would have been better for the 2020-2021 schoolyear.

as if he was entirely responsible for the decision. There is some semblance of a reasonable argument to be made along the lines that "dying from a preventable disease" is more detrimental than "learning from home for a year", I think. And even if kids were more reliably resistant to the infection, you could've had a lot of teachers dying due to proximity to kids in the classroom.

So, I'm not saying don't analyze/objectively look at the science backing how each of the COVID decision(s) were made, in fact as you suggest, we should. But the "blame Fauci for everything" routine is a right-wing argument, rooted in absolving the POTUS-at-the-time of all possible blame for any decisions that turns/turned out erroneous.

Where?
Here in Illinois, they missed about 10 weeks in the 2nd semester of 2020/2021 school year.
By September, nearly all the schools around here (Chicago market) were open, at least in the hybrid model.
I subbed extensively during that period, so this is first hand knowledge.
Comer is probably making that up just like he made up the part about Fauci lying.

There were limited re-openings in Spring 2021 for some students, but the entire 2020-2021 school year was essentially lost for Chicago Public Schools.

Was unaware of that. I'm in the suburbs/exurbs. That wasn't the case out here.
It does seem excessive to close fully until 6 or 7 months after the mass vaccination rollout.
I started subbing JH & HS in September of '21. Some schools offered online learning for students whose parents didn't want them in school yet, but that ended before the 2nd semester was completed.

I taught before, during, and through covid

We dumped money and contracts into tech that did very little to achieve learning outcomes.

I cannot tell you how many times I have students playing games when they should've been in breakout rooms remote "learning".

The response to covid in education will stunt our children for 10 years. I had one 8th grader return from lockdown unable to hold a pencil.

Interesting story -- in NYC they outfitted classrooms with fancy air purifiers that had 9 stages of filtration... activated carbon, potassium permanganate oxidizers, ionizers, you name it.

Independent testing showed they did zilch nada nothing against viruses in the air.

Point is - our covid response was a mess, and it was Trump's fault because he was in charge.

That's because Fauci was the one and only person dealing with COVID during Trump's administration who never lied once. People can choose to criticize his advice or recommendations but those were simply his opinions formed from decades as a brilliant scientist. Differing opinions are not lies. And personally, to this day, I would trust his opinions on how to deal with a pandemic over anyone else in the US.
