Tesla discontinues Model X and S vehicles as Elon Musk pivots to robotics
Source: The Guardian
In the clearest sign yet that Tesla is pivoting away from its electric car business, CEO Elon Musk announced on Wednesday's investor call that the company would discontinue production of its Model X SUV and Model S full-size sedan.
"It's time to basically bring the Model S and X programs to an end," Musk said. "We expect to wind down S and X production next quarter."
The model S and X factory in Fremont, California would be converted to produce Tesla's upcoming Optimus robot, Musk said.
Tesla's most recent quarterly earnings report showed slumping vehicle sales and declining revenue as the Musk pins the company's futures on AI and robotics. The earnings report described Tesla's chaotic year as a "transition from a hardware-centric business to a physical AI company".

The Fremont factory is right down the road from me. Wow. Can't happen to a more deserving idiot.

The CT makes no sense as it is a commercial failure, but Musk cannot admit that.

Their robots are well ahead of musk's and (like the Chinese EVs, they're cheaper -- and better)

I suspect Musk sees the EVs China is producing and doesn't want to make the investment to compete with those manufacturers, especially since Trump is effectively ceding the EV market to the Chinese.

Canada doesn't have as stringent safety requirements as we do in the U.S.

(5,506 posts)but then walked away from it. China will come back to haunt him, because his usefulness to China is now over. He stupidly accepted their invitation to build a plant there, ignoring all the obvious sign of a trap. So, he went there, trained all of their production workers on building EVs, basically handed all of Tesla's proprietary tech to them on a silver platter, which China made very good use of.
The Xiaomi SU7 is basically a Model S, with better software, at a Model 3 price point.

For years those cars were prized by liberals because they were sort-of eco-friendly. Musk alienated much of his customer base by aligning with Trump. Not a very good business move.
