Hakeem Jeffries won't commit to blocking additional Iran war funding

Source: NBC News

March 8, 2026, 10:24 AM EDT

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries on Sunday would not commit to blocking any additional funding for the war in Iran, saying the president has so far failed to justify the war but “we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.”

The New York Democrat was asked on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” whether House Democrats would move to block a funding request if the White House were to ask for more money for the military. Jeffries said the administration has so far “failed to make its case ... for this war of choice in the Middle East,” and unless President Donald Trump provides a “compelling rationale,” he’s “going to have a difficult case to make on Capitol Hill.”

Congress last year approved a $900 billion defense spending bill as part of routine annual budget appropriations, and the president signed the bill into law in December. But since the U.S. began its military operation in Iran, lawmakers have been considering the need to pass additional defense spending to bolster the U.S. military.

On Tuesday, following a classified briefing for senators about the war, several lawmakers including Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., told reporters that they expect the Trump administration will ask for supplemental funding for the war effort. Coons added that he would support additional funding for troops, but, like Jeffries, he demanded more information from the administration about the war.

The only "we" who can make that claim are the members of the House Democratic Caucus.

Anyone unhappy with Jeffries's leadership should contact the Democratic member who represents them in Congress.

Anyone who is not represented by a Democrat in Congress should start working now to elect one in November.

Anyone who does not have two Democratic senators and a Democratic representative should work hard to elect Democrats.

Anyone who does have have two Democratic senators and a Democratic representative should work hard to hold those seats.

And, of course, that includes me. We have to work very, very hard to elect Democrats and then to hold those seats in my purple-leans-red county.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Anyone unaware of Leader Jeffries statements on Trump's Iran War should first of all ask: "Why doesn't the media report on this?"

As for Jeffries being "feckless", no minority leader who lacks initiative and is irresponsible, incompetent, inept, without purpose, or lazy passes three discharge petitions in three weeks to block the Republican agenda and/or advance Democratic policy.

Jeffries successfully shepherded four discharge petitions that succeeded in forcing floor votes. We are the minority party, but Leader Jeffries managed to force four floor votes to stop the Republican agenda or advance Democrats agenda.

'Internal debacle': GOP lawmakers furious that Mike Johnson 'got outplayed' by Democrats

Democrats weaponized discharge petitions — one of the minority's few legislative tools — with unprecedented effectiveness. Three petitions gathered the required 218 signatures this year alone, forcing votes on releasing Epstein files, restoring federal workers' collective bargaining rights, and extending healthcare subsidies for three years.

Jeffries noted Democrats had "won more discharge petitions in the last three weeks than have been successful in the last 30 years."

The healthcare discharge petition proved most damaging to Johnson. When moderate Republicans sought a floor vote on compromise proposals, Johnson refused, leaving vulnerable GOP members no choice but to join Jeffries' effort. Four Republicans, including Pennsylvania Reps. Rob Bresnahan and Ryan Mackenzie, crossed party lines — humiliating leadership.

This is about an upcoming vote for supplemental funding for this ignorant war.

The vast majority of people do not support this and they could not get a war powers resolution passed in the House or the Senate because it had Democrats that voted against it.

He doesn't have control of his caucus. They currently have a one vote majority, defeating things like this should be pretty easy.

Let's be clear, I'm of the mind that Democrats should not do a damn thing and literally do everything legally in their power to grind government to a halt. Mango Mussolini is a pedophile and until Republicans agree to do something about it we shouldn't be doing anything. Nothing.

Further, when the cheerleaders deflect criticism of our Democratic leaders by asking what they should do, as the minority party, here's the answer:

Block or at least vote no on every funding bill
Block or at least vote no on every appointee
Block or at least vote no on every procedural issue

In short, they should do nothing that furthers der Fuhrer's agenda in any way.

Voting yes for any of it makes them complicit in all of it and puts them squarely--and irretrievably--on the wrong side of history.
