Venezuela rocked by deadly back-to-back 7.5 and 7.2 earthquakes

Source: CNN

From CNN:

• Back-to-back earthquakes: A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake has struck near the northern coast of Venezuela, collapsing homes and buildings in the capital, Caracas, and causing widespread destruction. It happened just 40 seconds after a foreshock with a magnitude of 7.2 rocked the area.

• Race to rescue victims: Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez has confirmed fatalities and declared a state of emergency. Hundreds of emergency workers are working to find and rescue victims.

• Capital in crisis: A Caracas resident who survived a quake that hit the capital in 1967 said today’s quakes were unlike anything he has experienced before. Another Caracas resident who escaped a damaged building said “the scene was like a horror movie.”

My local NBC station said that it could be over 100,000 deaths... not sure if that was accurate.

100,000.

Doesn’t mean it’s true—just that this what they are reporting.

For what they are going through.

The D-List Dictator is now responsible for rescuing his Venezuela subjects from earthquake devastation.

Responsibility and authority are two sides of the same coin. When one declares authority over a country (or anything), that person has the responsibility for results.

Responsibility and authority always go hand-in-hand.

This video from Venezuela during the earthquake is absolutely horrifying.

I’m genuinely worried that thousands will be found dead.

Sending all the best to our friends in Venezuela.

there was a 7.2 quake off the coast of NE Honshu. There have been several earthquakes of M6.5 or greater in that area within the past year. It's in the same general area where the 2011 M9.0 earthquake originated

The US Geological Survey (USGS) says high casualties and extensive damage are probable in Venezuela after back-to-back earthquakes rattled the capital and surrounding regions on Wednesday evening.

"The disaster is likely widespread" and aftershocks with potentially strong shaking may follow, the USGS says.

There's a 44% chance of more than 10,000 fatalities, a 30% chance of more than 100,000, according to the agency. And there's also a significant risk of landslides and liquefaction on the ground.

At least 32 people have died in the earthquake and some 700 people are injured, according to Venezuela's interim president Delcy Rodríguez.

These are the first figures that she has given regarding the number of deaths. We'll bring you more updates when we get them.

The acting president says the most affected state is La Guaira, north of Caracas, where "dozens" of buildings have collapsed. She calls it a "disaster zone" and a "true tragedy".

Speaking of the reports of 32 dead, the interim president says this is "not including any figures that may come in from the state of La Guaira".
