'Fired up' Dems set stage for big election turnout

While their counterparts across the aisle met in Norwood, the San Miguel County Democrats held their caucus and county assembly in Telluride’s Wilkinson Public Library on Saturday, March 7.

There were over three dozen Democrats participating in the meeting, with all of the local offices up for election boasting a Democratic candidate designated to the ballot by the delegates.

“People left feeling energized,” Democratic Party Chair Joan May told The Telluride Times. “The inequality and the disparity of wealth and the breakdown of basic human rights like education and health care and safety are so badly eroded that people are really fired up to take to the streets and vote.”

Though the county tends to support left-leaning candidates up and down the ticket by double digits, the days of Democrats holding a demographic majority among county voters appears to be a thing of the past. County Clerk Michael Wyszynski reports that the majority of registered voters in SMC are now unaffiliated, with 53.4%, followed by 32.46% registered as Democrats and 11.7% as Republicans.
