Michigan winter storm snow totals set records in U.P. cities

As Michigan residents get busy shoveling out from a bomb cyclone winter storm, the National Weather Service is reporting record snowfall for a pair of Michigan cities.

At the Marquette NWS office, west of the city, 17.1 inches of snow was recorded, which surpassed the old record of 11.5 inches on Dec. 29 set in 2001. In addition, Sault Ste. Marie recorded 6.6 inches of snow, breaking the record for Dec. 29 set in 1988 of 6.5 inches.

The eastern Upper Peninsula recorded the highest snowfall total overall — 24.5 inches in Eckerman, in Chippewa County, south of Tahquamenon Falls. In the western U.P., Big Bay, north of Marquette, and Champion, west of Marquette, each reported 24 inches.

The storm, which initially knocked out power to more than 116,000 customers, now is moving into Canada and the U.S. Northeast, though more lake-effect snow is expected to develop along Michigan's snowbelts in both the U.P. and Lower Peninsula. ...........................(more)
