Folly Beach special election to decide council seat

FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCBD) — Voters in Folly Beach head to the polls Tuesday for a special election to fill a vacant city council seat left open after the election of Mayor Chris Bizzell.

Two candidates are vying for the seat, both familiar names in Folly Beach politics.

John McFarland previously ran for council last fall and founded Save Folly’s Future, a group that successfully advocated for the referendum establishing the short-term rental cap. He declined to speak with News 2.

DJ Rich is also running for the council seat. He served on council for 14 years before running for mayor in the fall where he received 23% of the vote. Now, he hopes to return to his former seat, and a top priority is looking to save money in the budget and keep the city financial stable.
