Arts nonprofit prepares to sell historic Tacoma Armory

The historic Tacoma Armory, used as an entertainment venue and office space for most of the last decade, will soon be up for sale.

The nonprofit arts organization Tacoma Arts Live owns the building and announced Jan. 28 that it would cease operations and close the armory sometime this summer. TAL ticket sales for live shows have been declining since the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The decision to end most of TAL’s programs follows multiple rounds of significant operational changes to reduce expenses, which were unfortunately not enough to allow the organization to continue,” it said in a news release.

The assessed value of the property is $3.6 million according to records on file with the Pierce County Assessor’s Office. The armory’s auditorium is roughly 21,000 square feet; the basement-level office space is close to 40,000 square feet.
