Milwaukee Election Commission reports late delivery of absentee ballots

MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Election Commission announced it received an unusually high number of absentee ballots the day after Election Day, raising questions about mail delivery timing.

Milwaukee Election Chief Paulina Gutierrez called out the U.S. Postal Service, stating that 269 ballots were received on Wednesday, the day after the election.

Of the ballots received on Wednesday, the MEC said the majority were either postmarked on or before Monday, April 6, or carried no postmark at all. Under Wisconsin law, absentee ballots that arrive after Election Day cannot be counted.

"Our vision is that every eligible vote counts, and the fact that we have voters here who followed the rules and did everything they were supposed to do, their ballot, their vote did not count," Gutierrez said. "And that is deeply unsettling."
