Russia Derailed - Joe Blogs

For centuries, coal has been one of the foundations of Russian industry — supporting jobs, exports, and entire mining regions. Yet despite global coal demand sitting near record levels, Russia’s coal sector is now facing its most serious challenge in decades.

Coal remains a critical fuel for electricity generation worldwide, particularly in countries like China and India, and global consumption is still measured in billions of tons each year. Prices have come down from the extreme highs of the energy crisis, but demand has not collapsed.

So why is Russia’s coal industry under such pressure?

In this video, I look at the global coal market — who produces coal, who consumes it, and how pricing really works — before turning to the growing problems inside Russia. From export dependence and transport bottlenecks to falling margins, financial stress, and the loss of key markets, the industry is being squeezed from multiple directions at once.

With mines closing, companies struggling to stay profitable, and regional economies increasingly exposed, this is no longer just an industry issue — it’s a broader warning sign for the Russian economy.
