Why do dogs bark?

Skippa, my GR. goes out at nights and sometimes I never him him. Other times, like, tonight, he is barking up a storm. Rural property. no harm, no foul. But why?

Pretty sure my Pittie would suffer an anxiety attack if he knew alpha's hearing & sense of smell is so deficient.
