a line of cripples the maimed the burnt the blind
there is no port of refuge nor a place to call home
every hero has been claimed as walls are climbed
buried beneath the deluge or stripped to the bone
deep inside a mind shock has taken over control
eyes appear to look outward seeing within instead
lost with no key to unlock a soon to be dead soul
luck leaves the last card of a one who never bled
as beggars litter the streets to choose who to give
pass by with heads bowed every eye caste away
no more heroes to greet life is to continue to live
the faces lost amidst the crowd futility on display
after the war time passes and legends are created
learned in history classes the shields now ablated
