NWS meteorologist warns TD 09W is a 'clear and present threat' to the Marianas, urges preparation now
July 1, 2026
SAIPAN A National Weather Service meteorologist warned Wednesday evening that newly formed Tropical Depression 09W poses a serious threat to the entire Marianas chain and urged residents to begin preparing immediately, in an interview with NMI News Service.
Landon Aydlett, warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, said the system that forecasters had tracked for days as Invest 95W strengthened into a tropical depression at 1 p.m. and now threatens a passage through the islands late this weekend into early next week.
Tropical Depression 09W, this remains a clear and present threat for all of the Mariana Islands, Aydlett said. This is going to be coming our way.
Aydlett said forecast models keep the system on a tight track somewhere between Guam and Pagan on Sunday into Monday, with a peak intensity approaching a Category 4 typhoon. He said the first Joint Typhoon Warning Center bulletin, issued in the 1 p.m. hour, indicated a passage close to or south of Tinian as a Category 3 or 4 typhoon.
