These gas prices are almost as bad as the job market: Here's how close gas prices are to 2022 records
(NEXSTAR) – Gas prices across the U.S. have continued to climb, with the average cost for a gallon of regular gas ticking toward $4. As of Tuesday morning, AAA reports the national average sits at $3.977.
In a dozen states and the District of Columbia, prices are even higher. AAA data shows California remains the most expensive state to fill up in, with the statewide average sitting at $5.822 for a gallon of regular gasoline.
Washington and Hawaii remain the only states where gas prices have exceeded $5 a gallon. In nine others, the average is above $4 a gallon, with six states within eight cents of crossing that threshold.
Should the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline climb by just $0.023, it will be the first time the U.S. has hit the $4 benchmark since 2022. Before that year, the national average hadn’t reached $4 since 2008. Even if the price of gas hits $4, it will still be well below the record price of $5.016 the U.S. saw in June 2022.
