For kids from a nowhere place with no opportunities, the Guard probably does look like good deal, or at least an eventual ticket out of a dead end. One of my nephews financed his college education that way. Unfortunately, he has turned out to be a RWNJ jerk, but I was proud of him at the time for having some ambition. Still am, even though he's done some things I hate since then.
