I identified with everything in the article. For me, people use small talk to fill silence with other people and let others know they are there. It's a form of saying "Look at me!" I tend to be someone who doesn't want to have to listen to people take five minutes to get to the point when they could get to in less than 30 seconds. If someone has something interesting to say I'll asked the questions to understand what they're talking about. I think show Seinfeld is an excellent example of people engaging in small talk. Most of what they talk about is nothing.

I met a SNCO of the Year board and I was asked what I needed to improve myself. My answer was I needed to learn small talk. I explained I like deeper discussions of issues rather than the superficial talking. And yes, I was selected SNCO of the Year for the base.
